It stopped two or three metres away and looked straight at him rather than through him, and he took the photograph that day without yet knowing he'd paint from it years later.

Meaning & Inspiration

Elephant in the Ngorongoro Crater carries the Hebrew word qavah, the word translated as wait or hope in Isaiah 40:31, though its real meaning sits closer to an expectation held taut and not yet released. That's the quality the elephant showed without effort, fully present and unbothered by any urgency it hadn't chosen to feel, which is exactly what Job 12:7-10 points to when it says to ask the animals and let them teach you.
